This place was a pleasant surprise. Knowledgeable staff, charming ambiance, a clever menu structure, appealing options, and most importantly, excellently executed drinks. The owner (manager?), who created the drink menu, took the time to chat with us for a bit about his creation. Nice work. (If I were to offer any feedback, it's that the speakeasy shtick is a little played out. I didn't enjoy the experience any more or less because I had to take a red book off a library shelf to gain admission. It just seems unnecessary.)

We got lucky enough on a Friday night to get a table here without a reservation. But I would definitely recommend you make one! Once you get called in, you go through a secret door and once inside, you walk down a set of spiral stairs where you'll then find the hidden speakeasy bar. It's dim, cozy, and intimate. Not sure if they do this all the time, but at our table were some still water and a tiny glass of champagne. They also gave us a set of question cards for a conversation starter, which was rather cool! We enjoyed this place a lot! Drinks were uniquely served in such eclectic style and they were pretty good.

We came here on a whim for a night cap, and it is definitely a place to check out. We entered through a secret bookshelf in the Moxy, let in by our mixologist Chris after ringing a secret doorbell. We entered a dark room and descended through a spiral metal staircase into a small intimate room that reminds you of a posh basement; we got a welcome Prosecco shot and Chris gave us the spiel on drinks. After taking some time to look through the many options of original drinks this speakeasy had to offer, we made our choices and were all happy with our drinks. Highly recommend the gardener. Service is a little on the slower side as there was only one person making the cocktails and these were not simple cocktails, mind you! That being said, heads-up that there is an auto 22% gratuity on top of each $22-25 cocktail.

This bar is definitely a speakeasy to the 9's. It all starts off with you looking for a hotel lobby and going up to their second floor lounge area. Make sure you pick up your red book and have a seat on the couch, you will then be approached by a hostess. The hostess will make sure that you had a reservation because they're pretty strict on that, and they will always make sure you're aware that they do not sell food and it is a two drink minimum. The drinks were good but expensive so expect to drop money there, but the ambience is cool, the staff is great and tentative, and it definitely made you feel like you were in a different place and not just in gaslamp overall, probably one of the more higher end speakeasies I've ever been to.

Very fun experience! Drinks were innovative, aesthetic and delicious. Service was amazing and so personable. Halfway through the night, the bartender passed out a card game to each of the tables - great addition, added some fun talking points into the night.

We came on a Wednesday night with no reservations but we got lucky! We didn't have to wait long. Our hostess/server was so funny! She made the night memorable. We were seated at the bar and it was so cool watching the bartenders create all the drinks. So many cocktails to choose from! Our server also gave us a deck of cards which had questions which were fun to answer. Definitely coming back here for sure!

Yes, yes, and yes. I hope you get the beautiful soul known as Amy - she's witty and a true mixologist. She also made us feel so cozy and comfortable in the space we didn't leave until like 2am. Well lit speakeasy in Gaslamp/San Diego. Drinks are phenomenal- I had the I'm not drinking Merlot and the delicious sour - both were amazing but the delicious sour was me (on that day) in a glass tea cup - just perfection. Drink prices were pretty common for a speak easy and worth it!! So enjoy yourself and tip well. My friends got some other drinks I can't remember but they enjoyed themselves just as much as me! No food which is common for a speakeasy but you can get snacks outside.

I loved this speakeasy. Walk up to the second floor and grab a red book and have a seat. We didn't have reservations, but put our name on the waitlist and got a text 3 hours later so we came back to try it. To start they bring over a glass of champagne. I got an espresso martini and my bf had the old fashion. The menu is unique and has their own version and the version you would typically see. They also brought a card game over for us, which I loved for date night. The inside is super cute and intimate. The drinks were very good and service was great. Loved the chocolate covered pretzels you get at the end too! Def recommend!

My friend made reservations online for Room 56 on a Friday night just around 7pm. Just a note, eat before or after this experience, as there are no food options! Old pictures and reviews show that they used to, but they are serving only drinks here for now. Each person must order $40 minimum of drinks and there is also gratuity included. Once you enter the Moxy lobby and check in near the bookshelf door, the hostess will walk you down a flight of narrow stairs to get to the speakeasy. The atmosphere was not too dark, cozy, and subtle. There were fun cards with questions on the tables, perfect for a date night or just getting to know someone! Almost every drink was crafted aesthetically, and service was great all around. Do take some time to find the area as they are strict on reservation times. My choices of drinks were all from the cocktails section, but my favorite was Audrey's Backyard. The drinks were tasty and each had a nice presentation. I appreciated the staff recommendations and loved everything I tried!

Booked a reservation on a Saturday night for three. This place is located inside of the Moxy hotel which has extremely trendy decor and a large bar in the lobby. We arrived early and sat at the bar for a drink. I had the Jay Gatsby, a gin based passion fruit flavored drink and it was delicious. They currently are making Valentine's Day inspired drinks and my friend ordered the "Lover"(Taylor Swift inspired). You enter 56 descending down into a basement like room. Dark accents are painted around a smoky atmosphere and it feels very sophisticated. All the drinks we had were delicious and I highly recommend the clover club. FYI, there is a 40 dollar minimum per person.
